“Dieppe, the town of four ports”: a special connection to England via the Channel port, a port where fishing is wildly popular (with sea scallops as the star attraction) and a busy marina with a dry dock that is unique in France, built on an old dockyard, and a dynamic commercial port. The municipality has a prominent maritime heritage which you absolutely must explore. In November, the traditional Herring and Scallop Festival is the perfect concentration of this effervescent port life.

Architecturally speaking, the town is no slouch. Between its two gorgeous churches, a chapel dedicated to sailors, a 14th century château, mediaeval fortifications and more, Dieppe has much to be proud of. You can enjoy the large pedestrian shopping street in the town centre. And don’t forget to look up to see ancient inscriptions and lovely Anglo-Saxon façades. On Saturday mornings, mingle with the crowd in front of the remarkable Café des Tribunaux during the Dieppe Market. Did you know it was voted the Best Market in France in 2020?

Le Pollet

The old fishing district

Head to Dieppe’s old town in Le Pollet, where you can catch a glimpse of its maritime past at every street corner. To reach that neighbourhood, you will have to cross over a metal swing bridge, Pont Colbert, the only one of its kind in Europe and a listed Historic Monument. That structure, with its impressive machinery, really sets the tone. Between brick façades, pretty hidden courtyards, modest fishermen’s houses and more, the district takes shape in a part of town that was spared by the 17th century fire. Then, go along Rue Quiquengrogne, a small street whose name came from the cries of privateers and where, at the foot of the cliff, you can catch a glimpse of a remembrance of this authentic district: old cave dwellings known as gobes.
