Local markets

Whether at Dieppe’s big Saturday market or at one of the smaller country markets, this is a not-to-be-missed stroll for anyone who wants to soak up the local terroir and gastronomy!

Saturday is market day!

Every Saturday morning, the streets of Dieppe play host to the stalls of local producers and street vendors. Voted “Marché Préféré des Français” in 2020, it’s a must to start your weekend.

5 fruits and vegetables

a day

Above all, it’s the fruits and vegetables that give the market its changing colors with the seasons, and give strollers a taste for market garden tables. At a local grower’s, freshly dug potatoes stand side by side with home-grown tomatoes, while three lush bunches of rhubarb give rise to a craving for homemade crumble. Zucchinis and cucumbers have taken on a slightly unconventional look, revealing a handcrafted culture. Depending on the harvest, the region’s farmers and market gardeners offer fresh fruit and vegetables all year round: apples, pears, strawberries, carrots, spinach, parsnips and pumpkins.

It smells

cheese

For a taste of local produce, venture into the streets of the town center, around Saint-Jacques church and on Place du Puits salé, where farm products are all the rage. Butter, milk, eggs, cream or chicken direct from the farm, not forgetting the cheeses. There’s no need to introduce Camembert, which too often steals the limelight from other local specialities well worth a detour. Among these, neufchâtel has made a name for itself. Whether it’s a heart, a bonde or a briquette, take the time to stop, choose and chat with the producer – that’s the charm of the market.

Flowers, honey, watercress, mussels…

Multiple temptations

Along the way, one discovery follows another. Here, the florist has transformed the square into a fragrant, colorful garden; there, the beekeeper offers local honey, gingerbread and royal jelly. A little further on, you’ll find watercress from Clères, and mussels from Le Crotoy flanked by a few pots of samphire.

Fancy some takeaway cuisine? The rotisserie is the place to go for chickens, roast hams cooked in their own juices and other meats ready to be eaten. But the Dieppe market also offers traditional crafts. Haberdashery as in the old days, wicker baskets, herbal teas, natural soaps and cosmetics, local beers and ciders, plus a host of linen and clothing boutiques. Temptations abound and shopping bags fill up.

The Dieppe market is first and foremost a pleasant stroll through the town’s streets to meet the producers, but it’s also an opportunity to stock up on fresh, natural and local produce, to bring a little piece of the terroir back to the city’s tables.
