Newhaven is about more than just its ferry terminal! With its maritime heritage, sea excursions, gardens and creative venues, this small harbour town has some lovely surprises in store. Here are our top picks to help you start exploring it.
Newhaven Fort
Perched above the harbour, Newhaven Fort is one of the town’s most iconic landmarks. Having recently reopened following a major restoration, it traces the history of this coastal fortress through exhibitions, guided tours and activities.
Its location also offers stunning views of the harbour and the coastline. With its playground and range of activities, it’s a particularly good choice for a family day out.

Setting sail from Newhaven
From Newhaven Marina, set sail to explore the Sussex coast from the sea. The trips offered by Maverick Boat Adventures include sailing right up against the spectacular Seven Sisters cliffs.

Discover the creative side of Newhaven
Newhaven is also home to a thriving local arts scene. Galleries, studios and creative spaces offer a glimpse into a more unexpected side of the town.
Be sure to pop along to BN9 Studio and The Atrium at the Marine Workshops, where exhibitions, events and art projects are constantly taking place. Several workshops, such as Cement Arts and Oceanic Woodstore, also offer a more hands-on way to experience this creative scene.

On the edge of the South Downs
Newhaven enjoys a privileged location, nestled between the sea and the landscapes of the South Downs National Park. Walking trails, chalk cliffs and wide open spaces are all within easy reach of the town.
It is also an excellent base from which to explore the Sussex coast further and enjoy some of its most beautiful walks.

A family day out at Paradise Park
With its 10 hectares of gardens, small lakes, waterfalls and fountains, Paradise Park offers a lush green retreat just a stone’s throw from Newhaven.
The site is also home to the Planet Earth Museum, a dinosaur-themed trail and play areas: plenty to keep young and old entertained for a few hours.

Newhaven lies onthe Avenue Verte London–Paris, the cycle route linking the two capitals via Dieppe and the Channel crossing. From the port, the route continues through the countryside of Sussex, allowing you to discover another side of the region at your own pace on two wheels.
Whether you’re following the route over several days or simply want to enjoy a ride around Newhaven, it’s a lovely way to extend your cycling getaway.
