Mémorial du 19 août 1942

In Dieppe, the 19 August 1942 Memorial preserves the memory of Operation Jubilee, the most significant event in the town’s history during the Second World War. Since 2002, it has been housed in a unique building: the former Italian-style municipal theatre, built in 1826.

On 19 August 1942, nearly 6,000 Allied soldiers, including 5,000 Canadians, took part in a raid on Dieppe and the neighbouring coastal towns. The operation ended in tragedy: within a few hours, casualties were heavy, and this event left a lasting mark on local history as well as on the ties between Dieppe and Canada.

Through archive documents, photographs, artefacts, uniforms and scale models, the Memorial offers an insight into the course of the Raid and the experiences of the men who took part. A film combining an account of the operation with personal testimonies rounds off the visit.

On the theatre’s former stage, the ‘Faces of Remembrance’ keep the memory of the veterans alive, whilst, in the foyer, the Wall of the Missing pays tribute to the 1,200 victims of the Raid. It offers a way to better understand what the Dieppe Raid meant to those who lived through it.

The Memorial also welcomes French- and English-speaking groups, subject to booking.
