Sensitive natural areas

Ecological sites to preserve

Take the time to relax, look at nature, listen to the birds and discover the wealth of local floraEspaces Naturels Sensibles* ( ENS) are protected areas, perfect for enjoying a moment like this.

Dieppe-Normandie is home to three Espaces Naturels Sensibles. These are rare, sometimes threatened natural environments. They are of great biological and landscape interest.

They are managed in an ecologically appropriate way, with manual clearing of undergrowth, late mowing or grazing by hardy animals. Similarly, the facilities designed to welcome the public blend in perfectly with the landscape, without damaging the environment.

Le Cap d'Ailly

A fragile, ephemeral site
Sainte-Marguerite-sur-Mer

This is a very special site, thanks to itsdamp subsoil. As a result, you’ll find a Breton moorland feel to the Bois des Communes. Alas, this is also the reason for its fragility: the highly unstable soil of the cliffs inevitably slides towards the sea… Which is why, since 1775, the lighthouse has been rebuilt 3 times!

The current Ailly lighthouse still dominates the site. We recommend parking in its parking lot to start your walk.

Look up and observe the trees. Squirrels are a common sight. And if you’re lucky, you may even spot the more discreetowls.

Moors are areas quickly invaded by dense vegetation. Depending on the season, you’re likely to come across herds of grazing cows. If you take a close look at the flora, you may discover the carnivorous plant*[ woody_anchor id=”retourcarnivore”]drosera rotundifolia, which is of course harmless to your toes!

Le Bois de Bernouville

A space between land and sea
Hautot-sur-Mer

This wood is one of the few coastal forests in Seine-Maritime. Rich and varied, it is typical of coastal woods.

We particularly recommend it in spring. Daffodils, anemones, hyacinths and violets form a colorful carpet of flowers.

5 species of tit live in this wood… A timeless excursion awaits you, accompanied by the songs of the birds.

As you stroll along the marked ecological trail, you’ll discover the ruins of a medieval castle*. [ woody_anchor id=”retourmedieval”] Built in the 11th century, it is now part of the landscape. In the 20th century, it became fashionable to take romantic walks around old stones overgrown with weeds, and the forest surrounding the castle was planted.

Le Bois des Communes

An ecological nugget on the cliff tops
Varengeville-sur-Mer

This small 5-hectare wood is located in Varengeville. It’s home to some of the most unusual vegetation in Normandy.

Thanks to a particular subsoil, acid and humid, a moor has developed. Heather and gorse give it a touch of Brittany or Scotland!

Along the tree-lined paths of oak, birch and pine, you’ll come across the Royal Fern. This remarkable fern can grow up to 2 metres high.

Tritons, frogs, toads… In spring, the pond is an amphibian paradise! In summer, you’ll be able to admire dragonflies and damselflies* After spending the first part of their lives as aquatic larvae, they emerge from the water to take to the air.
