DIEPPE INTERNATIONAL KITE FESTIVAL

Asia Pavilion

Where kites were born... and keep on reinventing themselves
A lively tribute to the kite's Asian roots

Asia, the historic cradle of kite flying, is spreading its wings at Dieppe in a unique space, rich in shapes, symbols and traditions. This pavilion is an invitation to travel through the skies of China,Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and elsewhere.

🌏 What you will discover in this pavilion :

🐉 Celestial dragons and ritual kites

Admire a spectacular selection of traditional kites, including:

  • Majestic Chinese dragons, up to 100 metres long,
  • Sacred Balinese kites, often carrying spiritual messages,
  • Flying puppets from Indonesia,
  • Thai vibrators in the shape of buffaloes, whose sound accompanies the flight.

And don’t miss the collective flight of 10 dragons, a European record achieved every day, weather permitting!

🎎 Living ancestral know-how

All the kites on display have been made by master craftsmen and artists invited from Malaysia, Thailand, China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Some of them will be on hand to share their art, explain their gestures, and sometimes initiate visitors.

✨ Between tradition and contemporary creation

The Asia pavilion is not content with a museum look: it shows how today ‘s artists are appropriating these ancient forms to create new visual languages; often surprising, sometimes committed, always poetic.

🐲 Exclusive

Five kinetic kites will be making the journey from deepest China. Equipped with propellers on the inside, their mechanism enables them to operate veritable aerial automatons.
